Partnership FAQ for Therapists

Frequently Asked Questions: Therapist-Psychiatrist Partnership

Considering a collaborative care partnership with Luminous Vitality Behavioral Health? Here are answers to the most common questions therapists ask about working together.

Communication & Workflow

How do I refer a patient to you?

We’ve designed three simple referral methods to fit your workflow. You can send a secure email to director@luminousvitalitybh.com with basic patient information (name, contact, reason for referral) after obtaining patient consent. Alternatively, call us at (617) 855-9379 to discuss the case directly, or share our booking link with patients for self-referral. We acknowledge all referrals within 1-2 business days.

For detailed step-by-step instructions, see our How to Refer guide.

What secure communication methods do you use?

All clinical communication uses HIPAA-compliant methods exclusively. We communicate via secure, encrypted email for non-urgent matters and phone calls for time-sensitive discussions. We never share patient information through standard text messages, unencrypted email, or social media. When sharing patient information, ensure you have appropriate consent and use secure channels only.

How quickly do you respond to referrals?

We acknowledge receipt of referrals within 1-2 business days. For routine cases, patients typically receive their first appointment within 1-4 weeks depending on current availability. For urgent situations, we prioritize scheduling and will contact you directly to coordinate care. We understand timing matters in mental health care and work to minimize wait times.

Do you provide updates on shared patients?

Absolutely. Collaborative care works best with open communication between providers. After the initial psychiatric consultation, we provide you with a summary of our assessment and treatment plan (with patient consent). Throughout ongoing treatment, we’re available to discuss medication changes, side effects, or clinical concerns. We believe you should remain informed about any patient you continue to see in therapy.

Insurance & Billing

What insurance do you accept?

We currently accept the following insurance carriers:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (all plans)
  • Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
  • Tufts Health Plan
  • Aetna
  • Cigna

Patients should verify their specific plan benefits, as coverage varies by policy. We’re happy to provide patients with information needed for insurance verification before their first appointment.

What about Medicare and MassHealth?

Important limitation: Due to current regulatory requirements, we are unable to accept Medicare or MassHealth patients at this time. We apologize for this limitation and hope to expand our accepted insurance carriers in the future. If you have patients with these insurances, we’re happy to provide referrals to colleagues who accept these plans.

How does billing work for my patients?

Patients are billed directly through their insurance for psychiatric services. Copays and coinsurance vary by individual plans. We handle all billing for our services – you continue billing separately for your therapy services. This keeps your practice revenue independent and maintains clear boundaries for insurance purposes.

Clinical Scope

What conditions do you treat?

Dr. Lee specializes in medication management for adults with:

  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Depression (major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder)
  • Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder)
  • Bipolar disorders (I and II)
  • Complex medication management (treatment-resistant cases, multiple medications, side effect management)

With Harvard training and experience at MGH/McLean Hospital, Dr. Lee brings expertise in cases where medication regimens need careful adjustment or when patients haven’t responded to initial treatment attempts.

When should I refer vs. continuing to manage medications myself?

Consider psychiatric referral when:

  • Medications aren’t providing expected symptom relief after adequate trials
  • Patient has tried multiple medication regimens without success
  • Complex medication interactions need specialist oversight
  • Diagnosis is unclear and medication decisions would benefit from psychiatric evaluation
  • Patient requests specialist medication management
  • You’d prefer to focus exclusively on therapy while a specialist handles medications

Many therapists successfully manage straightforward medication cases themselves. We’re here for the complex cases, diagnostic questions, or when you’d simply prefer collaborative specialist support.

Do you provide therapy or only medication management?

We focus exclusively on medication management and psychiatric evaluation. We believe therapists like you are the experts in psychotherapy. Our role is to complement your therapeutic work with expert medication management, allowing you to remain the primary provider for your patients’ ongoing care. This collaborative model ensures patients receive specialized expertise in both therapy and medication.

Partnership Logistics

Do I need a formal agreement to refer?

No formal agreement is required to start making referrals. We operate on a simple, flexible collaboration model. Simply refer patients who could benefit from psychiatric consultation, and we’ll take excellent care of them while keeping you informed. Some practices prefer to establish more formal referral relationships over time as the partnership grows, but this is entirely optional.

What’s your availability for new patients?

Current wait times for new patient appointments are typically 1-4 weeks, though this varies with demand and scheduling. We work to accommodate urgent cases more quickly when clinically indicated. Once established as a referring partner, you’ll get a sense of typical availability and can set appropriate expectations with your patients.

Can my patients continue seeing me during psychiatric treatment?

Absolutely – and we encourage it! We believe the best outcomes occur when patients receive both excellent therapy AND expert medication management. You remain the primary therapist throughout psychiatric treatment. We handle medication management while you continue the therapeutic relationship. This collaborative care model is what makes therapist-psychiatrist partnerships so effective for patients.
